Perspective

Immunization Management

Studies have shown a significant level of incomplete immunizations in both urban and suburban practices in Cuyahoga County. In the near future, the rapid introduction of new vaccines, new combinations and new schedules of administration are expected to make greater inroads in disease control. Yet, there are significant improvements to be made in the immunization status of populations even with the technology currently at-hand. The Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the City of Cleveland Department of Public Health in conjunction with The Consortium for Healthy and Immunized Communities have taken the initiative to improve preschool immunization rates by offering free education and assessment programs for vaccine providers.

Educational Program

Free in-service training for doctors nurses and office staff with 1.5 hours of continuing education provided. The educational program can be brought to primary care offices , medical staff meetings, grand rounds or conferences. Highlights of the program include information on the Childhood Immunization Initiative, new immunization recommendations, new vaccines, childhood immunization schedule changes, missed opportunities, common misconceptions and immunization tracking. Educational materials and follow-up technical assistance are provided.

Assessment Program

Free immunization coverage assessments to any provider of routine childhood immunizations serving children two years of age and younger. Assessments are conducted at the provider site. Immunization dates and related data are entered into a lap top computer by a health department representative. The data is analyzed using the "CASA" software program developed by the Center for Disease Control. Immunization assessments are voluntary and the results are confidential. Aggregate data will aid in improving the immunization status of our community. Individual primary care practices will be provided with information regarding compliance within their own practices and the ability to correct any deficiencies.
